Oh, also, @SCarewe – thanks for sharing your scripts! These look really handy and informative. I’ll try to dig in a little deeper!

Re: Opening Kern On *immediately* deletes all group data from all glyphs, unless it is re-run.

> Thanks for your kind words! Well deserved! I do want to point out that I am being nit-picky as a designer and as a fan of this product. I realize that building something like this requires a lot more complexity than I am currently capable of, and I don’t understand all the constraints that you are...

Opening Kern On *immediately* deletes all group data from all glyphs, unless it is re-run.

First off: I love the plugin, and I'm excited to be trying it in a bigger project! I'm glad I can help surface issues that will hopefully make future versions even better. So: I've just noticed that opening Kern On immediately deletes all group data for all glyphs in a font, *as soon as Kern On is o...

Re: What is your recommendation for kB in "limit kerning to"?

Having now watched https://kern-on.com/under-the-hood, I see that the kilobyte limit isn't quite aligned to which categories are or are not kerned, but rather, which pairs are most likely in Wikipedia or Twitter text. It is a very clever solution to the problem of what to include in kerning (though ...

Re: Why are some same-shape sides not sorted into groups?

I guess I'm still curious why similar-shaped glyphs aren't added into groups... it seems like it might be a nearly "free" way to get kerning for more potential pairs, even if they aren't common. I think I read this discussion in another thread, so i suppose maybe this post is just to say t...

Re: Why are some same-shape sides not sorted into groups?

I see that part of my question ("how sure are we that those pairs don't happen in any of of the 90 or so Cyrillic languages we are targeting?") is answered in https://kern-on.com/under-the-hood. KO has a list of pairs to kern, determined and prioritized based on Wikipedia in 200+ languages...

Meta forum feature request: markdown, screenshot pasting

I'm guessing that you already have these features in mind, but I couldn't find a similar post, and I really value forums like this, so I wanted to make a post about forum improvements I would love. These things aren't super urgent, but would be helpful for writing good questions as a user. I've been...

What is your recommendation for kB in "limit kerning to"?

I am presented with a difficult question each time I use Kern On: how many kB should I limit kerning to? I understand that it is a logical setting for you to include, as I'm sure that first challenge to any auto-kerning system is that "it adds junk data and too many pairs." However, I susp...

Why are some same-shape sides not sorted into groups?

I'm working on a Latin + Cyrillic font with a collaborator, and we are trying out KernOn for it. My collaborator pointed out an unexpected issue: some kerns seemed to be missing, even though a same-shape-based group would put them there. That is, in a string like "ДЧДҶДҸДӋД," we would expe...

In what cases will Kern On adopt a manual kern as a model?

I'm working with a collaborator on a font which includes Latin and Cyrillic. It is a "marker" font, so it doesn't have super-regular glyph shapes, making kerning that much harder to do – and that much more desirable to automate! However, we have run into a few problems, and I'm wondering h...

Re: Do we need kerning against the space character?

Just echoing this as a desired feature. I know that not all good type designers do this, out of caution in not wanting spaces to close up by too much in string like "BOW WOW" or "HAT TAT" or "BOW TAT," etc. However, it is desirable to use kerning to give wordspaces a mo...

Re: Glyphs3 extension crashes app

No worries, issues happen in every tool! Very basic question, but ... how do I find the log? I’ve checked in `~/Library/Application\ Support/Glyphs 3` and Googled a bit, but no luck so far. (I’m not as familiar with Glyphs as I am with RoboFont.) Also, where should I send the log and font source? `■...

Glyphs3 extension crashes app

Problem: I have a Glyphs file with some kerning, and 2 masters. It was opened from a designspace with UFOs, but then saved as a .Glyphs file. When I try to do the kern on workflow (type 10 pairs that don’t need kerning), then hit the "Kern On" button, the entire app crashes. I’m happy to e...
