Wrong Kerning Group generated

Post by HugoJourdan »

Hi Tim,

I don't why but when I run KernOn, KernOn assign to some glyphs weird Kerning Group.
I attach you some exemple.
Sometime it's note very annoying, but other it's a real problem.

I guess it's because KernOn think the glyphs outline are similar to another glyph and decide to use same Kerning Group.

Did that happen because I didn't set correctly my models ?

Don’t worry about the names of the groups. They can’t be “wrong”. Also, they will not end up in the exported fonts.

I understand, but in some case, KernOn think two glyphs are similar and put the same Kerning Group for both whereas their design are quite different for not share the same Kerning Group.

Here is an example :
KernOn set for right Kerning Group of "sterling" the same as "ampersand", while the outline are completely different and does not share a similarity.

Hi Tim,

I trying to configure as well as possible models but I meet a lot of wrong association Kerning Group by KerOn.
I think sometimes KernOn detect that two glyphs are similar but they aren't, and because of this It's create a lot of collision.

For example here KerOn decided to assign the same left group for guillemetleft and questiondown.case. And you can see the collision create with the dcaron.

That's mean I have to create a model for the pair [dcaron][questiondown.case] ?
If yes, this is annoying because I can't know which glyph KernOn will not correctly assign KerningGroup before run it.
I noticed that if I turn the pair [dcaron][questiondown.case] to "Auto", there is no more collision and KernOn assign another KerningGroup for questiondown.case.

I know that the combo [dcaron][questiondown.case] is not important because nobody will type but even that, it's annoying to keep collision even if a pair will will never be typed.

Maybe you can simply try to live with that annoyance? (When I developed Kern On I was assuming that users are rational, but now I am learning that not everyone is. Sorry, I am not so motivated to make “fixes” purely to satisfy irrational feelings and annoyances.) We’re not making fonts to look pretty in the font editor – they are made for the real world.

Just leave everything as it is and it will be fine.

I understand, and I think you are right. It's not really a problem.
Just maybe add a note somewhere to explain this point. To explain to user that sometimes KernOn can produce some annoyance pairs (not rational) but this is a part of the process. It's the price to pay for this useful tool.
