KO has a mind of its own?

Post by bech »

I’ve used KO for many years. The last week I don’t recognize it anymore.
I started noticing kerning pairs that were supposed to be (Model) 0 change to like -1.
I saw other pairs that I know I put at like (Model) 12 go to 15. (I assume it is after running KO, but I haven't been able to pin-pint when the change occurs since I just randomly notice it). It has happened a lot during the last week btw.
Did I accidentally change a setting somewhere, or is there a bug going around?
I was surprised not to find the forum flooded by posts like this, so I guess it's a me problem? ;)

Thanks!

Sorry, this is a bug I also discovered a couple of days ago. In version 1.36, I tried really hard to avoid what some users consider “unnecessary” kerning pairs, and as a result, even model pairs would be written imprecisely in some cases. I just published an update, which should fix the problem.

This sounds great by the way. I’ve been quietly wishing for something like that actually. Is it still doable or even active now, or on ice at the moment? Cheers!

One thing I noticed is that the interpolate kerning and the autokern from features is pretty buggy. It would be great if I could set it to "copy" the same kerning from another master. Say I have regular and italic with the exact same setup but slanted and want exactly the same kerning. Right now I get varied results from the kern from or interpolate options so I just copy/paste kerning values, which is a bit annoying.

Are these known issues?

Saying that the features are “pretty buggy” is not particularly helpful. If you experience any specific problems then please send me the file, with a description, and I can have a closer look, and fix things.

I'm describing the issue after my "pretty buggy" comment (no harm intended, sorry).
I'll record a video of what I mean and send it to you asap.

This is probably very late to be of any help, but have you considered setting a "Link Metrics with Master" custom parameter for your italic masters? Then the spacing and kerning will be copied 1:1 (Kern On also recognises this).
