KO Consistency

Post by ramakrishnamanda »

Hello there,

I'm new to KO so forgive for my amateur questions.

I've been trying to kern for eg. V√ and I've set the combination as a model along with H J o v, but the KO doesn't seem to kern the √ with the rest of the Uppercase or lowercase. How do I resolve this issue?

Why do you want to kern this combination? Where does it occur?

Kern On contains a built-in list of pairs that are autokerned by default.
See https://kern-on.com/manual/#which-pairs-are-kerned.

At the moment, before the √, there is only ()+−/± and various hyphens. I assumed other combinations are typographically not relevant but I’m open to discussion.

The other combinations are simply not in the Kern On system at all. If none of the Model/Auto/Independent segments are active, this means it is an ignored pair. You can explicitly switch an ignored pair to Auto so as to ensure it gets autokerned. Kern On refers to this as a user‑set auto pair (think of it as adding it to the list of autopairs for this font). For more details, see https://kern-on.com/manual/#pair-settings.

In your case, if you have many glyphs you want to be kerned on the left of the √, you can type the required pairs (ideally in separate lines), then select all text and click on Auto. You may want to use a very simple Python script to generate the pairs.
